Favorite Things: An Indirect portrait
The Egyptian Pharoahs brought
their treasured belongings with them into the afterworld.
Now, our common sense belief is that "You can't take
it with you" but all the while our consumer culture tells
us that we are defined by what we own. I have my own conflicts
about keeping versus getting rid of stuff. This led me to
the idea of an indirect portrait created by a cluster of one
person's possession's : pieces of furniture, tools, clothing,
appliances, presents received, and even some of the ephemera.
This tangible evidence of a life gives clues to a person's
vocation, taste, social standing, habits, and hobbies. Costructing
a suspended cloud of objects in cement is an apt parallel
to the indirect act of ascribing identity through objects
and the difficulty of fully memorializing someone. There is
a conflict between the heavy objects- personal possessions-
and the lightness of the imagined spiritual self.
